I love that Facebook is constantly evolving. What I don’t love though, is blindly navigating through those changes as a user.
As a business owner, freelance writer, and influential blogger, I wear many hats professionally. For me, all of my work is equally as important, but I have a preference when it comes to which role is highlighted on which social media platform.
When adding my work to my Facebook profile, I was pleased to discover that I could list more than one current occupation, but frustrated to discover that it seemed to be impossible to change the order in which those jobs were listed.
Thanks to some trial and error (and a little help from Google), I’ve discovered a temporary fix.
Here’s a screenshot of my personal Facebook page for reference:
At the top of the box, there is an opportunity to write a short blurb/intro, and below is a list-style section featuring your current and (if you choose to add it) previous work positions. While my roles seem to be somewhat equally represented on this page, only the first job on the list appears under my name in a search. So, for example, if I had “Blogger at Bits of Bee” as one of my work listings, that’s the only job that would appear under my name and photo if someone were to do a search of my name on search platforms such as Google.
Why does this matter?
Your personal Facebook profile is a great way to draw new visitors to your Business Page, or to informally network with potential collaborators or clients. Not only is your personal information easily accessible (if you choose to make it visible), but so are your business details, which can be beneficial should someone want to contact you with an opportunity.
How do you fix this annoying little problem?
If you are currently working in more than one role, and would like a different job to appear at the top of the list on your profile page, here’s what you can do:
a) You can delete the out-of-order listings, and then re-add each one in the order you’d like them to appear. Be sure to do this in reverse chronological order, with the last (most recent) entry appearing at the top of the list (similar to how you would list your previous work experience on a resume – from oldest to most current).
b) You can change the start year of the listing (ie: 2014 – Present), and the listings will appear in chronological order on your profile based on the saved start year, again, in reverse chronological order.
Note: if the job you’d like to appear at the top does not have the most recent start year, you may want to go with option a.
I hope you’ve found this little social media tip to be helpful. If you know of a better way to make this little edit to your Facebook profile, please share in the comment section below.
